Our founding fathers of America embraced hemp as part of our independence. George Washington’s estate in Mount Vernon Virginia is maintained by a private foundation and began producing hemp in 2018 for the first time in two centuries. In collaboration with the University of Virginia, hemp was sowed and harvested.
The idea began when a campaign was launched by a hemp patriot (Brian Walden) to illuminate the concept of the industrial uses of hemp.
Throughout George Washington’s life, he cultivated hemp for many industrial uses including rope, sail canvas, and clothing with hopes of developing hemp as an alternative to tobacco. In 1793 the invention of “seine twine” was presented and today, it is used as a tightly twisted yarn in fishing nets.
US flags were made from hemp as a tradition until 1937 when the Federal Marihuana Tax Stamp criminalized all industrial strains of cannabis alongside its cousin with psychoactive effects. Our flags are now made with nylon.
